Over 55s rewrite the holiday rule book

Across Australia, over-55 travelers are redefining what it means to travel, moving away from fast-paced holidays and taking a more thoughtful approach when planning their next journey. Instead of rushing through bucket-list sights, they want journeys that are slower, reflective and grounded in real cultural connection.

A big shift in this age group is how they think about value. Many are choosing to spend their savings on experiences that enrich their lives now, with the SKI (Spending Kids Inheritance) trend gaining momentum. The focus is on enjoying meaningful travel while health, time and curiosity are on their side.

Insights from Wendy Wu Tours’ ‘The Journey Ahead’ report show the priorities driving these choices. Crowds and tourist levies are major turn-offs for 74% of over-55s, which is pushing interest towards travel that allows people to take their time, explore at their own pace and avoid packed tourist areas.

Small group touring is popular, with 94% enjoying the comfort, connection and shared experiences that come with it. Another 75% appreciate having the planning done for them, especially when it comes to navigating complex itineraries or long-distance travel.

This support matters even more for solo travelers, a growing group within the over-55 community. Travelling alone offers freedom, but it can also bring challenges like safety concerns or decision fatigue. Structured, inclusive itineraries can give solo travelers the chance to explore with confidence, meet others along the way and still enjoy moments of independence.

Travel also means more than sightseeing for this age group. Many see it as a chance for self-discovery and cultural immersion. Learning local traditions, meeting community members and exploring regional food and history regularly stand out as the most memorable experiences. These moments create deeper connections with the places they visit and leave lasting impressions.

Family continues to guide travel plans too. Holidays often become an opportunity to spend quality time together and build shared memories, whether that’s through multigenerational trips, visiting family overseas or simply escaping somewhere peaceful.

As Australians look ahead, one thing is clear, over-55 travelers are leading the shift towards slower, richer and more intentional travel. Their choices are reshaping how holidays are designed, with more focus on depth, connection and experiences that stay with them long after they return home.
