Noosa beaches, parks open for exercise only

Noosa’s parks and beaches are still open, but for exercise use only.

Signs are in place at beaches to remind residents of the restrictions – in effect as part of strict new measures by Queensland’s Chief Medical Officer to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Council’s Property Manager Clint Irwin said residents could still enjoy a stroll or a run in Noosa’s parks and along beaches, but residents should otherwise stay at home.

“Now’s not the time to spend leisure time at parks and beaches having a sunbake, reading the newspaper or having a coffee,” he said.

“People exercising in the water, including surfers, too, need to remember that efforts to prevent community transmission of COVID-19, such as social distancing, don’t end at the shoreline.

“We have kilometres of open beaches from Sunshine to Peregian and there are currently some nice surfing banks along this stretch.

“If you’re keen for a surf to get some exercise then consider the open beaches, rather than congregating in the surf at the points at Noosa Heads or between the rock walls on Noosa Main Beach.”

Noosa Heads Senior Sergeant Ben Carroll said officers hoped to not have to issue fines.

“Noosa Police encourage people to do the right thing and utilise our public spaces and beautiful beaches for exercise only. Let’s all work together to fight this disease,” he said.

“It is incumbent upon us all to do whatever we can to prevent the spread of this virus and protect those most at risk in our community – that is why these restrictions are in place.

“We don’t want to have to issue fines to gain community compliance – but if people do not follow the directions of the Chief Health Officer we will have no other option.”
