Teenagers charged following Peregian fires

Police have charged two teenagers following investigations into an alleged deliberately-lit fire which destroyed bushland and forced a large number of residents to evacuate their homes in the Peregian area on Monday.

It will be alleged that around 4.30pm on September 9, a group of juveniles were in bushland off Koel Circuit when a fire was deliberately lit.

The fire quickly spread in a south-easterly direction to Peregian Beach, damaging a significant amount of bushland before threatening housing and destroying one home.

Emergency Services battled the blaze for three days and were forced to evacuate residents from a number of neighbouring suburbs. A number of sport fires continue to burn in the area and residents were today allowed to return home.

Ongoing investigations have led to a 14-year-old Peregian Springs boy and a 15-year-old Coolum Beach girl being charged with endangering particular property by fire.

Investigations are continuing.

With Queensland continuing to experience extreme and dangerous fire conditions throughout the state, police are reminding the public of the dangers of lighting fires or committing acts of arson.
