The Sunshine Coast can expect dangerous surf conditions, intense winds and abnormally high tides this weekend – and beachgoers are asked to be extremely cautious.
The dangerous conditions come as Tropical Cyclone Oma moves south to southwest towards the Queensland Coast.
Although the cyclone has weakened to a category one system overnight, it is forecast to intensify again throughout the day.
Noosa Council said that there should be no need for any sandbagging, but if you think some are required, collect them from the Tewantin SES Shed in Goodwin Street.
Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Group co-ordinator Cathy Buck asked people to be extremely cautious of the conditions.
“Water levels on the high tide could possibly exceed the highest tide of the year,” she said.
“The severe weather warning for dangerous surf, abnormally high tides, and damaging wind gusts remains in place this weekend.
“We know that there is some hype around the big surf this weekend, but these conditions can be extremely dangerous.
“Powerful surf and rips may develop, so we ask that people consider their safety first.
“Dunes can collapse when large surf undercuts them, so please ensure children stay well away from the foredunes for their safety.
“Council’s coastal and road crews are out and about monitoring the conditions of our beaches for any erosion, minor flooding in low-lying areas and checking for any potential damage.”
Normal beach and surf conditions are expected to return early next week.
