New partner joins forces with Australia Zoo to inspire change

Wildlife Warrior Robert Irwin celebrates the new Containers for Change Crocoseum.

Australia Zoo’s world-famous arena will now be known as the Containers for Change Crocoseum, in an effort to bring a shared vision together of protecting the natural world.

Seating 5000, the Containers for Change Crocoseum hosts the Wildlife Warriors show daily, as the Australia Zoo team feeds the magnificent crocodiles, leaving visitors with an appreciation for these apex predators.

Containers for Change is Queensland’s container refund scheme, run by Container Exchange, which offers a 10-cent refund for eligible containers which are returned to be recycled.

So far, more than 6.5 billion containers have been returned for a refund, saving them from ending up in landfill and refunding more than $650 million to individuals across Queensland, creating over 815 jobs in the circular economy.

When returning containers at one of over 360 Containers for Change refund points across the state, recyclers can also choose to donate to a charity or community group, with more than $10.8 million donated directly through refunds since the launch of the scheme in November 2018.

Wildlife conservationist Terri Irwin said, “We couldn’t be happier to begin this wonderful partnership with Containers for Change who will not just support our strong passion for sustainability, but they will actively be involved in the Wildlife Warriors show, helping us raise awareness towards the importance of recycling and maintaining a minimum carbon footprint on the planet, through their container refund scheme.”

Every day in the Crocoseum, Australia Zoo discusses the world’s biggest conservation issues while introducing visitors to gorgeous resident wildlife such as birds and crocodiles, aligning with the mission of conservation through exciting education.

In 2018, Australia Zoo had over 1800 solar panels installed on the roof of the Crocoseum, which will deliver 21 billion-watt hours of energy over 25 years and reduce emissions by 16,500 tonnes.

Container Exchange chief executive officer Natalie Roach said the partnership with Australia Zoo reflects both organisations’ commitment to preserving Queensland’s unique environment for generations to come.

“Containers for Change not only prevents containers from ending up as litter in the environment but also creates huge fundraising opportunities for wildlife care and preservation,” Natalie said.

“We are thrilled that all visitors to Australia Zoo will have a chance to learn about how they can look after the planet while also contributing their container refunds for Australia Zoo to continue their mission of conservation,” she said.

“As an iconic Queensland venue where people from all around the world learn about our unique wildlife and natural environment, we are proud to be a part of Australia Zoo’s message of caring for the world around us and our beautiful state.”

Australia Zoo is proud to work with like-minded organisations such as Containers for Change and take one step closer towards protecting the natural environment and building a better, more sustainable world for both wildlife and humans.
