Sunshine Coast Airport stands with industry for Airport Safety Week

Sunshine Coast Airport has joined forces with local aviation operators to carry out a safety inspection of its runway as part of national Airport Safety Week 2021.

Airport-based personnel participated in the ‘Foreign Object Debris’ (FOD) walk on Wednesday 20 October, to help locate material which may pose as safety hazards which could include small rocks and pebbles or loose paper materials.

Sunshine Coast Airport Communications and Community Engagement Manager, Kylie Ezzy, said in line with this year’s theme – ‘safety is always our destination’ – the exercise signified collaboration with the aviation industry which continued to endure the effects of COVID-19.

“Safety is at the heart of everything we do here and today’s activation brings awareness to the measures undertaken behind the scenes to ensure the safety of our people and our passengers,” Ms Ezzy said.

Ms Ezzy said improved safety measures also featured throughout the Sunshine Coast Airport’s terminal in response to COVID-19 and reminded everyone of the need to play their part.

“Earlier this year we received international accreditation for our COVID safe practices through the Airports Council International (ACI) as part of its Health Accreditation Program.

“We know that when the borders reopen, the wider Sunshine Coast region will be a highly sought- after destination. It’s important for us to continue to build consumer confidence in air travel and while the accreditation is a great achievement, it doesn’t stop there,” Ms Ezzy said.

“We will continue to look for ways to improve our passenger experience as safety is our highest priority.

“Whether on the airfield or in our terminal, our staff and on-airport community are focussed on ensuring the safety of all who visit Sunshine Coast Airport.”

Thousands of employees at airports and aerodromes across Australia and New Zealand will participate in Airport Safety Week which is between 18-22 October 2021 and is an initiative of the Australian Airports Association (AAA).
