Fairy tale or… Chick Flick?

Winter and Juliet Young with Cinderella.

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL

LAST Wednesday evening elegant gowns were donned, and tiaras glistened as ladies young and old gathered at Noosa’s BCC Cinemas for the premiere of Cinderella.
The ‘Chicks at the Flicks’ event proved once again to be a popular affair with delicious cupcakes, a lolly buffet and refreshing punch delighting cinema goers as they eagerly awaited what Disney had in store for the age-old favourite.
With a sparkle of magic, a tickle of wit and one dreamy prince-charming, the film took the audience on a journey of love, loss and the power of kindness.
The story begins at the very beginning, with Ella (Lily James) and her mother and father lighting up the screen as the ‘picture-perfect family’.
It is not long, however, before Ella’s mother falls ill and passes, closely followed by the death of her beloved father.
Finding herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and just as nasty stepsisters, Ella struggles to stay strong and true to her mother’s words to “have courage and be kind”.
While it is a tale known by many, this version of Cinderella still cleverly gifts viewers with surprises along the way, keeping eyes glued to the screen throughout the 113 minute running time.
Lily James could not have been better cast for the role as the innocent Ella, and the same can be said for Cate Blanchett, who everyone loved to hate as her evil stepmother.
As for prince charming, trust me ladies, he (Richard Madden) does not disappoint.
Rated PG, Cinderella is the perfect feel-good flick for the whole family.
The vibrant graphics and charismatic characters of the popular fairy tale will leave you smiling and with a little extra belief in the impossible.
Oh yes… and googling ‘where on earth can I buy some of those divine glass slippers’ – Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out!
Noosa BCC Cinema’s next Chicks at the Flicks will be Pitch Perfect 2, on Wednesday 6 May. The event begins at 6pm and the movie will be screened at 7pm.
All tickets are $25 and include a Chicks at the Flicks gift bag.
