On the lookout for trouble

By MEGAN OGLE

IF you enjoy a beautiful view of the ocean from the comfort of your home then the Noosa Coastguard want to hear from you.
The not-for-profit guardians of the waterways are calling on the community to help spot trouble at sea by forming a community watch group of “spotters”.
Noosa Coastguard Commander Alan Hall said the organisation previously had “spotters” along Sunshine and Peregian who could be called on if there was trouble afloat but said more volunteers were needed.
“If there was a problem reported, a flare sighting or something similar, we could call on the spotters, the residents with a view of the ocean, and ask what they could see from their balconies,” Cdr Hall said.
“These people could save lives or a boat in distress or could save us from dispatching a boat if it was a false alarm. We’ve found that the residents can often see what’s going on even if they aren’t looking.
“If anyone is prepared to help out and become a spotter we would love to hear from them.”
To find out more information or to nominate yourself to be a spotter call Cdr Hall on 0414 957 427.
