Kids can come-n-try

Come and try day.

Noosa Council is hosting another of its popular Come-n-Try Sports Arvos for primary-aged kids to try out some summer sports to see what fun and games suits them.
Local sporting groups will be providing free fun activities in cricket, baseball, softball, Little Athletics and orienteering on Wednesday 16 August, 3.30-5.30pm at the softball fields, Noosa District Sports Complex, Butler Street, Tewantin.
Community Development Manager, Alison Hamblin, says past Come-n-Try afternoons have been very popular with the local kids.
“It’s really a great afternoon out and a great opportunity just to experiment with sports, in a fun and non-competitive environment. The kids have a little healthy snack before they start, and then they play for about two hours,” she said.
“It’s always fun, and it’s really helpful for the local groups that get a few extra signups for the summer season.”
Only six out of 10 children aged between five and 14 years participate in sport outside of school, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The Australian Health Survey conducted in April 2012 found that 25 per cent of Australian children and teenagers, aged five to 17 years, are overweight or obese, indicating that we need to foster a more sports-minded culture that encourages children to be physically active.
People who are active dramatically reduce their risk of many diseases, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Regular exercise is also known to reduce the risk of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Habits are established early in life and evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults.
As our kids become more interested in digital devices, it is more important than ever to encourage them to get involved in sports to balance the time sitting still. This is a fantastic opportunity to try out a range of different activities to find that perfect fit for your child. Fitness is an invaluable gift to a child’s future.
