NOW in its ninth year, the annual Pomona Poker Run is on again with more than 300 bikes expected to make the 200km Hinterland trip.
Held as part of the lead-up to the King of the Mountain Festival, the poker run will see riders travel a 200km course through the scenic Sunshine Coast Hinterland collecting cards along the way.
The ride will set off from Stan Topper Park, Pomona, and finish at the Cooran Football Club where the person with the best poker hand wins the day.
Some great prizes have been donated by sponsors, and there will be prizes for the second best poker hand, the worst poker hand, a ladies draw and raffles on the day, plus the Gympie Historical Motorcycle Club will present a prize for the oldest participating bike.
Poker Run organiser Stephen Stewart said he had seen some awesome bikes take part in the annual event, including two 1930s Indians built with left-hand throttles rather than the standard right-hand.
According to Stephen, these bikes were built especially for the New York Police Department and had the left-hand throttles because most people are right-handed, so when the NYPD were chasing an offender and needed to shoot at them from their motorbikes, they could use their right hand.
Pillion passengers are welcome for the Poker Run, but entrants are reminded the minimum legal age for a pillion passenger is 12 years old, and furry passengers are also welcome with many small dogs hitching a ride.
The Pomona Poker Run will be held on Sunday 5 July from 9am, with registrations open from 8am at Stan Topper Park, Pomona. Entry to the Pomona Poker Run, which is the major fund-raising event for the King of the Mountain Festival, is $15 per rider and $5 per pillion passenger.
