Fishing ban battle heats up

By JOLENE OGLE

FOR local Brian Williams it was his “last ditch” attempt to save the local waterways as he dashed through Noosa last Thursday urging locals to make a submission to the Fisheries review.
Submissions for the Queensland Department of Fisheries review closed on Thursday 30 October at 5pm, and will now be reviewed by the appointed board.
Mr Williams, who lives in a home that backs onto Lake Cooroibah, handed out information sheets to locals and visitors along the Noosa River and in Noosaville in an attempt to urge everyone to help ban commercial netting.
Mr Williams is demanding commercial fishing be banned from both Noosa North Shore and the inner lake systems.
“We don’t want a sustainable approach, we want it to stop completely. Then the river systems can actually recover to what they were 40-50 years ago,” he said.
Mr Williams said there are plans to form a single body that will work to stop commercial fishing, which is what he said is currently a “losing battle”.
“We want to get a single body with knowledgeable people,” he said.
Mr Williams said Noosa Council’s decision to submit a request to ban commercial fishing on Noosa North Shore a fortnight ago was an “incredible start”.
