WELL the Cooroy Community Bowls Club has risen from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix. Negotiations with the new owners have been successful so we live to bowl another day.
It is exciting and it is bowling as usual while we strive to rebuild spirit and interest in our club.
The End of an Era games were completed, a fitting finale for the Cooroy RSL Bowls Club. The winners of the Terry Silver Cup in the High Rollers were 1st Eumundi Boys on 58 points, 2nd JeLs on 54 points and 3rd Galahs on 53 points. The wooden spooners were Cormorants on 38 points.
Tuesday Jackpot Pairs were R. Butler and G. Duffield. Runners-up were C. McGrath and R. Sorrensen.
We will endeavour to have the green available for games on Tuesday afternoon (Jackpot Pairs), Saturday afternoon (Jackpot Pairs) and Sunday afternoon.
Consideration is also being given to holding a ladies’ afternoon once a month on a Thursday afternoon.
Madill’s Day will still occur every second Thursday and our inaugural event will be Ladies Day (formerly President’s Day) on Thursday 26th June. CONGRATULATIONS to the men’s team of Tony Howard, Bob Mulvogue, Troy Rowley (s) and Micheal Sorrensen (sub) on winning the 2014 Cooroora two-day men’s triples. This was a great effort in a strong field.
May’s RSL bowls was played at Noosa Heads with Alan Clamp’s team +18 winning from Bob Cook’s team +15. Joint leaders to date are Jack Dibble and Terry O’Neill with a margin of +41.
It was great to see the ladies’ games director, Van Vignon, bowling again on Tuesday. Also noticed at the club were Val Reinicke and Gina Patterson who have had knee surgery. Apologies to Dossie Buckley for last week’s error with her name.
The ladies’ triples championship is underway and the men’s will soon be drawn. Please check the noticeboards and website. Our club coaching on Saturday mornings is available. Contact the club for details. The Monday training with Rick Dickson and Bob Ginnaw is attracting good attendances. Arrive 12.30 for 1pm start.
The weekly competitions were well patronised, with Tuesday’s John Madill’s monthly nominated fours won by Mary Forbes, Olive Nicholas, Peter Hogan, Carolyn Pulham, from Jim McDonald, Van Vignon, Ann Booth, Margaret Dodd. Wednesday’s Laguna Estate men’s triples had Lucio Lloyd, Jim Bain, Ken Johannesen +25 winning from Rod Gunderson, Peter Renwick, Peter Vignon +22. Friday’s Laguna Estate mixed three bowl triples had Kath Simmons, Gary Bond, Bryan Simmons in the winner’s circle from Jan Lancaster, Marlene Trembath, Peter Larke second.
NOOSA HEADS
JUNE means winter – and that means heading for Noosa for many of our regular bowling visitors whose names are starting to show up on our playing lists. Each year, dozens of them arrive here from New Zealand and our southern states, with some lucky ones staying a month or two.
Sadly, Noosa Heads Bowls Club must vacate its Junction site by May next year, so many may well look for an alternative holiday destinatiion.
Brian Ford and Niven Gugich combined to win last Tuesday’s competition from the triples team of Ken Bain (Syd), Ron Wallish and Graeme Thiele (NZ) Jeanette Emery and Carol Studley took out the Wednesday ladies from Fran Coules and Melbourne visitor Faye Brazel. Pat Teale and Andrew McCall were winners of Friday Open Jackpot Pairs over Jan and Bill Burkitt.
The biggest margin in Saturday play was scored by the triples team of John Channing-Pearce, Beryl Nelson and Frank Turton. Next came Eileen McDonald, Fabio Cantori and Beryl Small.
Entries for the ladies triples and men’s veteran pairs close off this week with first round matches due to be played by Thursday of next week, 12 June.

POMONA
THE Ladies Triples Finals were played this week, with Veronis O’Connor, Jennie Smith and Gaye Bible defeating Judy Muir, Desley O’Neill and Tina Camp 22-15. The social game was won by Julanne Brown, Jill Mita, Mel Hobbins and Elizabeth Dewhirst.
The Men’s Fours Championship Finals saw one of the greatest “underdog” wins in the club’s history. Col Carruthers, Bill Schutt, and Russell Hill, three “social” bowlers with experienced skip Greg Hodder beat Russell Murray, Ron (Curly) Greig, Keith Muir and Nick Twining 20-9. This result will be the talk around the club for weeks to come. Congratulations gentlemen for an outstanding win. Greg’s team had a good win against Mel Hobbin’s team in the first round then went on to beat Garry Mitchell’s team to make it to the finals. Nick Twining’s team had beaten Patrick Gray-Spence and his team to make it to the finals.
Twilight bowls was won by Norm Walmsley and Rick Goulding W+17, with runners-up Marie Gray and Russell Hill W+14.
