THE Noosa Dolphins came away with two wins after both reserve and A Grade teams took out the top spots over University rivals.
The relatively young Reserve Grade side took on the Sunshine Coast University team at their Sippy Downs home ground on Saturday 2 April.
A fairly physical and undisciplined game, with a player from each side spending time in the bin, the Dolphins pulled ahead finishing the game 15 points ahead of University, 22-7.
After two impressive tries to Noosa in the first half, one to Taylor Moffat and the other to captain Aaron Di Lanni, the boys led University 12-0 at half time. By full time Taylor busted through the University defence and again scored a good try in the corner with half back Pat Matters crossing the line just before full time.
Not to be outdone, the Dolphins A Grade team went head-to-head with the University Barbarians in a grand final rematch to start the season.
A few absences gave the younger players a chance to show their ability and they didn’t disappoint. A brilliant try was scored in the corner to Louis Turnbull within the first two minutes of kickoff and Noosa’s half back Will Hanton converted a penalty infringement from the sideline.
Young Josh Munroe impressed when he chased a cleaver chip kick through to score a try close to the posts, with Will again converting the try.
University caught the Noosa boys napping at the start of the second half and scored early. Snapping out of their half time coma the Noosa boys hit back with a great 40-metre try to outside centre Jay Moffat, again converted by Will Hanton.
The final score went to the Noosa Dolphins on 25 and the Barbarians close behind on 19.
Coach Timsie said he was delighted with the result given that some of the young players were out of position and stepping up for the first time to A Grade.
“Overall the Noosa forward pack dominated the scrums but need to work on their line outs,” he said.
The award for best-and-fairest went to Nick Colvin.
This Saturday 9 April will see the Noosa Dolphins host their first seniors home game of the season against the Nambour Toads with Reserve Grade kicking off at 1.45pm and A Grade at 3.15pm at the Dolphin Oval, Bicentennial Drive, Sunshine Beach.
