Noosa District State High School students had a glimpse into life sleeping rough on the weekend when they slept on cardboard boxes in basic and cold conditions at the school’s Minburi campus in the Mary Valley.
A school spokeswoman said the event has been run by the school for the past four consecutive years, with this year’s event attracting the largest contingent with 80 participants.
More than $3,700 was raised by the students who were sponsored to attend.
The students played board games and enjoyed other activities including dancing to keep warm and the Cooroy Rotary Club provided soup for the students’ dinner, with many then retreating to the bonfire to toast marshmallows.
The students managed well with no complaints and they left the camp on Saturday with a greater appreciation for their warm bed and gratitude for all that they have, the spokeswoman said.
