Burpees for Butterflies

By MEGAN OGLE

BURPEES are usually an exercise best avoided due to the physical exertion required to execute just one, but members at Flitefit Peregian Beach love a challenge and are attempting to complete over 10,000 burpees in just one month.
Flitefit owners Nicki White and David Fletcher have challenged members of their gym to push their limits for a good cause this month in a bid to raise funds for local charity Sunshine Butterflies.
“If our members reach 10,000 burpees collectively we will donate $200 to Sunshine Butterflies,” David said.
“And when individual members reach 500 we will donate a further $10.”
Over 55 members have signed up for the challenge, donating upwards of $5 to join in, with the oldest member being 78 years old and smashing out 150 burpees in one go.
Another member is already up to 940 burpees bringing the collective number of burpees to 7538 in just seven days, promising to smash the 10,000 goal in no time.
Gym member Narin Harrison said the challenge, while raising much-needed funds for a great cause, has also created a fun atmosphere amongst the members.
“There’s a great sense of comradery, there’s a lot of fun teasing and friendly competition,” Narin said.
