Recipe for success: Just add students

By TESSA MAPSTONE

A SPLASH of wine and a burst of flames kicked off the eighth Market Chef cooking series at Eumundi last Wednesday, bringing top chefs and school students together to celebrate local food.
Chefs from some of the region’s best restaurants will be on hand over the next eight weeks to offer up their tips and techniques alongside delicious dishes cooked in front of the market audience.
Bohemian Bungalow head-chef Bryce Davis was the first to bring his flavour and flair to the stage for eager students to emulate and market-goers to behold.
Hospitality students from Maroochydore and Burnside State High Schools were the first this term to don aprons and roll up their sleeves for some hands on mentoring.
Market manager Peter Homan said the focus was really on local produce and teaching students, and market-goers, what to do with it.
“I think it’s those little things that you don’t see your mum and dad doing often at home that really make a difference,” he said. “Those real tricks of the trade.”
Mr Homan said he was blown away by the enthusiastic response Market Chef has had from local restaurants, and the students’ cooking impressed him too.
“The flavours were really powerful and strong and pungent.”
Market Chef will continue each Wednesday morning at the Original Eumundi Market from 10am to 11am until 18 June.
