HUNDREDS of paws pounded the pavement at South Bank last Sunday 7 February for the Shut it Down Rally where lovers of greyhounds marched in a bid to ban greyhound racing.
The march took place on the National Day of Action and was organised by the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds which saw protests in all major cities except the Northern Territory.
Tewantin local and greyhound carer Nicole Mecklem attended the march and said it was an “emotional, powerful and inspirational” experience.
“Over seven hundred like-minded people gathered, united in sending a strong message that dog racing needs to end,” Ms Mecklem said.
Ms Mecklem, who has fostered greyhounds for over four years through the local group Friends of the Hound, said many Sunshine Coast locals had made the trip to South Bank and were well received by onlookers.
“As we walked along the river at Southbank, onlookers waved, clapped and called out their thanks for the action we were taking,” Ms Mecklem said.
Ms Mecklem said she was opposed to the greyhound racing industry and was calling for it to be shutdown.
“We are opposed to government support of this socially unacceptable industry which simply cannot be reformed,” she said.
“Over breeding, killing and abuse of the dogs is systemic.”
“My children and I love the gentle nature of these quiet, sensitive dogs.”
“They are perfect family pets and deserve far better than running for their lives.”
