Funk on with funk masters

THE 70s and Funk are two ideas that are inseparable. Nothing can beat that thrilled-to-your-toes zing of funk you feel when you’re out for the night with family and friends.
Funkzilla knows that the cherry on top of any night is a bit of funk. Each of Funkzilla’s artists are all masters in their own right and have made a funky name for themselves throughout the Sunshine Coast.
Toni Zaffa on lead vocals is a Sunshine Coast native; she was a Soul Sister in the Jesus Christ Superstar National Tour. Toni has toured with Deni Hines, Jon Stevens of Noiseworks, Renee Geyer, Ian Moss of Cold Chisel and recorded with Kirk Pengilly of INXS and Richard Clapton. Toni has played across the USA to sold-out performances including the hottest New York clubs with The David Letterman Band among others. Don’t miss Toni’s powerhouse vocals, she’s a funky force to be reckoned with.
Ric Halstead, on tenor saxophone, has led an extensive international career as a saxophonist and recording artist becoming an influential member of the Hong Kong scene. Ric has performed with Red Rodney, Nat Adderley, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Smith, Jimmy Witherspoon, Gatemouth Brown, Mick Taylor, Elvin Bishop and Albert Collins, to name a few.
Annie Jackson, on alto saxophone, made her name as one of Sydney’s only female funk sax players. Highly sought after, Annie has performed at all the great Sydney venues including the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Opera House, Darling Harbour and the Sydney Olympics.
Jon May, on keyboard, studied classical piano as a teenager and from there excelled at all genres. Jon has performed with Phil Emmanuel and Kevin Borich and has toured the world over, accompanying the greats, such as Lenny Kravitz and Bob Dylan’s band, Bucky Baxter.
Arron Bool, on lead guitar, originally from Melbourne, is an extremely versatile guitarist, performing and recording with musicians from Cat Empire and Blue King Brown. Arron has worked with Lena Salim, Sahara Beck and Rachel Dunham from Rock of Ages.
Robert H. Kani, on Bass Guitar, has recently returned from touring extensively overseas including successful performances in Singapore, Malaysia, Katmandu and New Zealand.
Ami Smith, on drums, is a dynamic drummer who has performed throughout New Zealand. She is in great demand and now brings her virtuosity to the Sunshine Coast.
This star-studded list of performers makes Funkzilla a performance you won’t want to miss. If you want to get your funk on, head down to Tewantin Noosa RSL on Friday 13 May at 8pm.
