Seven of the best championships

By RON LANE

THE results say it all: seven fights, seven wins and seven championship belts coming home to the Impact Boxing Academy at Cooroy.
These are the results from the recent Wide Bay Amateur Boxing Championships held at Bundaberg; and they are being rated by head coach Mark Evans as one of the best achievements in the clubs history.
“These championships,” said Evans, “have been incredible. It was a great weekend with fighters coming from as far north as Townsville, south from the Gold Coast and inland from Longreach. We had well over 30 fights on the program, and the standard was very good.”
A lot of the coaches used this tournament as a lead-up to the National Golden Gloves which will be held at Acacia Ridge 24 to 27 August. The fighters who created this incredible record of seven fights for seven wins in their various divisions were; Brock Shelly 91kg, Luke Martin 60kg, Ella Boot 60kg female youth, Sam Cameron-Hands 60kg mens youth. Ben Cameron-Hands 54kg, Coen Allman 42kg, and Kayden Merceica 36 kg all fought in the Junior Division.
Regarding the program Evans said, “All coaches agreed that without a doubt the fight of the tournament was Sam Cameron- Hands of Cooroy vs. Jacob Wylie of Warwick. In the first round, Wylie was caught with some good combination punching which saw him take two eight counts. Then in the second, Hands took an eight count and then again in the third and final round, Wylie was caught with some good clean punching that saw him receive his third eight count. This resulted in Cameron-Hands getting a points win decision.”
Another outstanding performance came from Ella Booth also from Cooroy. Her win in Bundaberg gives her a record of five fights for five wins. This young lady now holds the Qld Novice Championship as well as the Wide Bay Title, and her performance during these fights is starting to attract the attention of well-respected judges. We wish her well.
After the August Golden Gloves, the next big tournament will be on 5 November at the Noosa District High School Gymnasium. This will be under the promotion of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, and if previous tournaments held at this location are anything to go by it will be a great night of boxing.
Already clubs from Victoria and West Australia have indicated they will be in attendance.
