Pennants to the past

TWELVE months after the closure of the Noosa Heads Bowls Club, former club members have marked the occasion by hand-sewing a unique tribute to the Noosa Junction site.
A collection of competition ribbons and pennant flags won by former Noosa Heads Bowls Club members have been sewn together by fabric organiser Brenda McFeeters to mark the anniversary of the closure after 45 years of operation.
Brenda, a former member and wife of the club’s long-time coach, along with Jenny Bowie, spent many painstaking hours creating the tribute.
Brenda hopes former bowlers will see the tribute as a way of preserving the history of the Noosa Heads Bowls Club.
The former bowls site in Noosa Junction remains vacant, which Brenda said is heart breaking.
Since its closure 12 months ago member have “dispersed to the four winds”, many transferring to Tewantin.
“Sadly, we estimate 30 and 40 have given up bowls all together,” Brenda said.
“In the end, the club went down with $2.5 million in the bank, which it could not spend. What a travesty,” said one former bowler who wanted to remain unnamed.
“The money has now been given away to bowls clubs all over the Sunshine Coast region.”
It is hoped a permanent home will be found to display the banner and other club memorabilia.
