DEPUTY Prime Minister and Federal Wide Bay MP Warren Truss announced his retirement today in Parliament and has tweeted his appreciation for the influx of “generous comments”.
“I greatly appreciate the generous comments in Parliament today following the announcement of my retirement,” Mr Truss tweeted.
“It has been a great honour.”
National media has reported that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull paid tribute to Mr Truss thanking him and describing his departures as “a watershed”.
Former prime minister Tony Abbott also addressed the chamber on the announcements stating “there are few members of Parliament who leave at their peak, in their prime and at a time of their own choosing”.
Mr Truss’ departure will pave the way for a reshuffle of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s Cabinet, with the Nationals also pushing for another seat.
Media reports tipped Barnaby Joyce to stand unopposed at a Nationals leadership ballot tonight.
