Mount Cooroora in Pomona is the scene of one of the most gruelling and challenging athletic events Australia has to offer and continues to attract competitors from around the world.
As part of the King of the Mountain festival, Sunday 23 July marks the 39th anniversary of the notoriously steep 4.2 km Bendigo Bank King of the Mountain Challenge race.
Proving that age is no barrier if you are fit and healthy, this year’s race will see a record set for the oldest competitor in 77-year-old Frank Falappi from West Woombye, who continues to compete in athletic competitions and has won many endurance events.
A project of The Cooroy and Pomona Lion’s Club, the King of the Mountain Festival brings together a host of attractions and event experiences and competitors and spectators alike can look forward to another fun-filled event.
The second Zinc 96.1FM Prince and Princess Race has already attracted many junior athletes and will be held on Saturday 22 July with the winners awarded their trophies on the main stage after Sunday’s race. Registrations are still open until 14 July.
Evidence of the diversity of the festival’s attractions can be found in its jam-packed program.
The festival offers something for everyone and includes other family-friendly races, heritage markets, amusement rides, a skate park competition, local cuisine and live music all within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona and in view of the majestic Mount Cooroora.
Festivities will begin early on the Sunday with the arrival of many different car clubs showing off their classic vehicles in the lead up to the big race at 2.30pm.
Celebrations will continue afterwards and into the evening with live music and free entertainment.
Last year the event was recognised when it was awarded the 2016 Sunshine Coast Sports Federation Event of the Year.
