Cool evening… fun and games

COOROY BOWLS
THE cooler evenings of Wednesday and Thursday were alive with fun and frivolity as 12 teams enjoyed their initial practice game in the Business Bowls Challenge.
Whilst 14 teams challenged in the High Rollers, JeLS, Bam, 101’s, Kybong Kids, Eumundi Boys, Royal Flush and Rob and Co all had wins.
Both groups enjoyed the delicious food prepared by chef Lex.
Tuesday Jackpot pairs was a fun activity as the green had been renovated – a good opportunity to re-try the old club bowls… more challenging for some than others.
Saturday Jackpot Pairs’ players enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of bowls. Bettina Winkler and Claire McGrath went home the winners and the jackpot prize money went off yet again. The club is yet to secure a regular sponsor for the game – held every second Thursday of the month. This month’s challenge will be sponsored by Belvedere Newsagency in Cooroy – thanks go to Gary Christensen and family. – Julie Ainscough

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS
There was a good crowd along for the club mixed-pairs final at Noosa on Sunday and they were well entertained by a high-quality match, which went down to the wire… and beyond.
An extra end was required to decide the contest in favour of Jan and Bill Burkitt over Jen and Steve Bowie 19-17 shots.
Next up is the club mixed fours which gets started this Thursday.
The monthly Noosa 1500 was played on 1 September and this open pairs’ event was won by visiting New Zealander Noel Williams who teamed with George Coules. This was the first time they had played together, so it was a fine effort. Winners of the first round losers section were Tewantin bowlers Bryn Whitcombe and Tony Howard.
In men’s pennant the Division 1 side had a brilliant 64-57 win over competition leaders Coolum Beach on Saturday. Division 3 went down in a close contest at Caloundra, while Division 6 lost to Pelican Waters.
Lady bowlers finished their first six rounds on a high, topping the ladder in Division 4 and running second in Division 2. They go into the final’s play-offs this week but did a bit of early celebrating with a river cruise on Tuesday evening… you may have heard them.
Bill Roberts and George Manera took out the Tuesday Men’s pairs with Alan Teale and Bob Ginnaw having the next highest margin.
Wednesday triples’ winners were Daphne Reed, Carol Studley and Gill MacDonald.
As usual, Friday Jackpot Pairs winners were Mal Lloyd and Ron Wallish with runners-up taken by Debbie Austin and Sharyn Briggs.
The triples’ team of Juleen Mayze, Heather Rider and David Nimmo scored on Saturday.
There are still some vacancies for the Laguna Ladies All-Star Fours to be played on Thursday 2 October. To qualify, bowlers need to have won a club championship at some time. Ring NHBC on 5447 3433 for more information. – The Chalker
