Quilts lined with fun

By Margaret Maccoll

Even their name, Patches of Cooroy, is a giveaway as the quilting and craft group is more than a place for serious stitches.
Behind the beautifully crafted quilts and diverse range of craft, the group offers fun and friendship and helps local charities through its fund-raising efforts.
Group president Margaret Kippen said the quilting group was started in her drapery shop through customers in 1995, but through its popularity “grew too big to handle” and in 1999 was established in its own right.
“It’s a good place for like-minded people to meet once a week,” Margaret said.
“It’s a nice place to escape to and be in the company of women. We all have a bit of fun. We’ve helped members through personal trauma.”
The women meet every Tuesday at the CWA Hall and last weekend they held their biennial Cooroy Quilt and Craft Show.
The tiny hall was brimming with quilts of all colours and busy with guests keen to view them.
The styles were as diverse as the members who pride themselves on their thirst for knowledge.
“People are very sharing with their knowledge and will stretch themselves to learn something else,” Margaret said.
“They want to have a go.”
Proceeds from the show will go to the Rural Fire Brigade. Margaret said with the dry conditions and recent fires it was the logical choice to donate to the hard working volunteer group.
