HIS name is Bryce Hegarty, and he is yet another local young man starting to make a name for himself in the tough world of Amateur Boxing.
Working out at the Noosa Box Office (NBO) gym under trainer Israel Kani, Bryce boxes in the 75kg division. Earlier this month, he travelled to a tournament at Acacia Ridge, Brisbane, where he was successful in winning the annual Golden Gloves. This was Bryce’s second consecutive win in the Golden Gloves tournament.
Bryce, who has a total of 54 fights for 48 wins said, “It was great to win the Golden Gloves again and what made it better it was also my 21st birthday.”
Late tonight (Thursday) along with two other local boxers Sam Cameron- Hands and James Beasley of the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, Bryce will board his first ever international flight; a flight that will take him to Germany, where along with his travelling companions he will represent Queensland; boxing against the German team for the Brandenburg Cup.
Bryce will then return home, and after a four-day break will again fly out, this time to China. Under the care of Australian coach Kevin Smith the purpose of this is to attend an intensive two-week sparring and training camp.
“I can’t wait; Germany then China. It will be a great learning experience.”
Asked how he started off in boxing he said, “My dad Shane was friends with Israel, but I was playing basketball. My brother Drennen who’s a year older started going to Israel’s gym once a week and I followed. He was 11 and I was 10 and it started from there.” When not boxing, his other love is mountain running.
“My other goal is I want to be the King of the Mountain; you know, win Pomona.”
