Club shines in rescue championships

By DEB COURT

LAST weekend the Sunshine Coast championships were held at Kawana Aquatic centre, and Sunshine Beach SLSC entered a team of about 30 nippers and cadets in the U11-U19 age groups.
With a variety of events including patient tow, manikin tow and carry, obstacle race and medley relays, the pool rescue championships are designed to improve stillwater rescue abilities of the club junior lifesavers.
The Sunshine Beach team again showed they are not just a competitive team in beach and ocean events, but also a formidable force in the pool as well.
Highlights included club U11 boys finishing first and second in all individual and team events, a large contingent of club U12 girls managing to fill most of the top eight places in all races and club U19 boys Nick Sloman and Jarrad Greentree finishing first and second in all their events.
Nick Hooper (U12) and Ruby Nolan (U14) also won individual events, and great efforts from all age groups were a highlight. The Sunshine Beach pool rescue team now moves onto the Gold Coast and Queensland Championships in late June.
