IT’S been all about the river lately, with the strong winds we have been having over the last week or so, the river has come into its own.
There have been some great captures upriver with nice school jewies between the lakes and the odd winter jack hitting soft plastic as they are rolled across the bottom. Try the Deeper holes as this is where we are seeing them on the sounder, it’s just a matter of finding the lure that will do the job. The Threadybuster is one such lure; they come in a range of colours that the jewies seem to love. Further downriver the fishing has been equally good with big flathead caught around the Tewantin area all the way to the mouth. Trevally is another fish that seems to be prolific in the river at the moment, Woods Bays and the Noosa Sound has been where the action is.
These great sports fish have been feeding on the schools of baitfish that are brought into the river with the larger tides we are having at present. Head out at sunrise and you will be rewarded with the sight of large trevally hitting bait schools on the surface, this is the perfect time to get those poppers and surface walkers out as the trevally love to ambush surface baits from underneath.
Offshore things have been a little quite with the windy weather through the week, whereas the weekend anglers where rewarded with some great days, Chardon’s Reef was a real hit with nice snapper, cobia and sweetlip. Soft plastics again came into their own, with snapper taking a liking to what was on offer. The lift and drop method seems to work best with the longer curly tail plastics attracting the most attention.
