Remembrance Day was marked with a ceremony concluding with the release of white peace doves at Tewantin Noosa RSL sub-branch at 11am on Saturday 11 November.
Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien, a former decorated police officer, was guest speaker at the ceremony.
He recalled the Battle of Beersheba, fought 100 years ago on 31 October 1917, when the Australian Light Horse rode into battle and captured the Turkish stronghold in what is remembered as the last great cavalry charge.
Thirty-one Australians died in the battle and 700 Turks were captured.
“It paved the way toward an Allied victory and the peace we enjoy today,” Mr O’Brien said.
“We can’t take this peace for granted.”
As people paused to reflect on the bravery and courage of these men who fought to defend our freedoms, he said they should acknowledge the strength of families whose loved ones gave their lives to defend this country.
Sub-branch president Mick Reid said as defence personnel continued to put themselves in harm’s way in war, it was also a time to reflect on those defence forces a long way from home doing their duty.
