Child centre is wasting away

It was a proud day for the children and staff at C&K Childcare Centre, Tewantin, when councillor Joe Jurisevic presented the centre with a Certificate of Achievement for waste reduction.
The accolade is part of the Shire of Noosa’s STARS program that teaches pre-school and primary school children the importance of reducing waste and the best methods for recycling various materials.
The program also involves teaching children how to create compost and look after a worm farm, as well as other ways to reduce landfill.
In the year since C&K Childcare introduced the STARS program, staff have reduced their waste volumes going to landfill by 47 per cent, increased their recycling by 34 per cent and are diverting 6 per cent of their waste to compost.
Cr Jurisevic praised the childcare centre’s efforts, congratulating the children and staff at Tewantin C&K on a fantastic waste reduction result.
“The challenge ahead is for parents and the rest of our community to match the efforts of the kids,” he said.
“We can all do this in our own homes, schools and businesses to reduce waste and improve recycling every day.”
