Big year for tennis club

By ANNETTE ADSETT

COOLUM Tennis club celebrated a successful year of tennis with red ball tennis, ordinary games and much socialising followed by an excellent meal.
Local councillor Steve Robinson was present to award trophies to the winners of club championships, while Sunshine Coast participation officer Nick Crispin presented the junior trophy.
The players present to receive their trophies were Kristy Drain, the junior champion; Nobu Eto, the B Grade men’s singles titleholder; Joan Payton, who won the B Grade doubles with Karen Mason; and also the runners-up, Lynn Heath and Gerda Nuyts Selen.
The mixed B Grade doubles was won by Lynn Heath and Peter McCall with Joan Payton and Noel Messer the runners-up.
The winners of the B Grade men’s doubles were Cam McAlpine and Scott Derham.
This year, the club had its best representation ever of players with social players, fixture players, fit tennis players, juniors and families. The club provided the hams and the attendees contributed a feast. Particular thanks need to go to the wonderful people who provided the healthy salads. Thanks also to Ena Heinrich for her beautiful cake that was very much enjoyed.
Altogether there were over 70 participants in the day, with some people taking advantage of the free tennis. All were welcome and the would like to see people back for its next free day.
Mark Caruana and family are visiting over Christmas and Adam Spence is organising a day of tennis for everyone to catch up with the Caruanas.
The likely date is either the Saturday or Sunday before Christmas. Please contact Adam on 0400 214 419 after 16 December to find out more details.
Some of the more active attendees enjoyed the red ball tennis so much that Steve is organising a tournament next year. Andrew has kindly agreed to lend us the equipment.
Red ball tennis was a great leveller with different ability levels and required more effort than expected. Some of the players had trouble adjusting to their big racquets and hard balls afterwards.
Dates to set aside for the new year are the open day on Saturday 30 January and the annual meeting on Sunday 7 February.
People are inquiring about membership for next year. The forms are at the clubhouse and I will email the details for payment online.
We would prefer if everyone hands in a form with all their current details. The details of next year’s membership are on the white board on the verandah of the clubhouse.
If you want to join in any of the programs, please visit the club or email us at info@tenniscoolum.com.au or ring Andrew on 0421 391 505.
