NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB
EARLY rounds of the men’s pairs championships were played on the weekend and the finalists have been decided. Bob King and David Deane will battle it out with Alan Pearson and John Boyle in this week’s final.
The biggest surprise was the bundling out of reigning champs Shane Burke and Ross Ward by Paul Rieck and Graeme Yeoman in the first round.
Greg Dale and Troy Rowley took the main prize in the April Noosa 1500 Open Pairs event with runners-up going to Marilyn Clayton and Brenda Balchin.
Winners of the first-round losers section were Joan Foster and Jenny Belchin. This series started in early 2013 and the monthly capacity fields have shown this contest to be a real winner.
With the closing of Noosa Heads Bowls Club the 1500 will be staged at Tewantin from June onwards, and they already have some 40 teams entered.
Last Tuesday’s men’s pairs winners were Danny Crameri and Bob Heir. Ladies’ triples winners on Wednesday were Marie McCall, Sharyn Briggs and Judy Lord.
Paul Rieck and Patricia Parker won the Friday Jackpot Pairs, with Alan Pearson and Andrew McCall taking the first-round losers prize. Saturday winners were Ray Day, Eileen McDonald and Beryl Nelson.
Our annual Golden Bowl fun night proved a great success on Saturday with more than 80 bowlers and supporters turning out for some wining and dining, and a lot of laughs. This year’s Silver Bowl was awarded to Debbie Austin with everyone’s favourite greenkeeper Ross Ward taking the Golden. Ross also announced a special all-time award to Garyth Williams.
Great to see that the future of lawn bowls is in good, young, hands with the Queensland under-15 and under-18 state championships being conducted in Bundaberg during this past week. – The Chalker
