Jetski breach ‘disgusting’ says witness

Onlookers were horrified by the behaviour of several jetski riders near whales in the waters off Noosa National Park on Tuesday 15 August.
Witness Jason said walkers and visitors were enjoying watching whales breaching and playing close to shore on Tuesday morning, when the “disgusting” incident occured.
“All of a sudden four jetski riders arrived and then harassed and chased the whales until they went out to sea,” Jason said.
“It was a shame to see these majestic animals being treated in this manner. People on the shore were disgusted especially when one rider raised his arm in victory celebrating his ability to get so close.”
Jason said that once the whales disappeared the riders turned their attentions to a pod of dolphins.
“They circled them until they also retreated further out to sea.”
Jason said he wanted to make the matter known “to raise awareness to other members of the public and help protect these beautiful animals”.
“It is a shame to see a lack of policing for these morons on jet skis.”
Under Queensland law, jetskis are prohibited from approaching within 300 metres of whales and dolphins. Restictions also apply to the speed and number boats that may approach, with a limit of three boats within 300 metres at any time.
Those in boats are advised to move slowly and keep at least 100 metres distant from whales, and at least 50 metres from dolphins.
