PREP students at Sunshine Beach State School have been getting into technology in a musical way.
The students have been learning about the properties of materials and have been identifying which items move in the wind, make a sound and are waterproof as well as assessing the strength of each item.
The usual suspects like plastic, wood, metal and glass were investigated in order to assess their properties, but some creative minds also collected keys, shells, CDs, coast hangers, old earrings and a microwave tray to investigate.
The project culminated in each Prep student designing a unique wind chime that was waterproof, moved in the wind, made a sound and was strong enough to stay hanging. Parents came in and joined in the fun, helping their child construct their chime according to their design.
Louise, a parent of a Prep student, said she had really liked coming in and “being a part of my child’s learning”, commenting “I’ve noticed that the kids really love it when their parents are in the classroom helping out”. Prep student Flynn agrees. “I like it when my Mum comes in and helps my class- and then I hug her when she leaves”.
The end result of the session was 70 beautiful chimes, unique in their own way, hanging under the trees in the shaded Prep area and producing a melodic sound. If all have met their criteria, then the Sunshine Preps will be enjoying these chimes for many weeks ahead.
