THE year may be winding down but Coolum Tennis Club has remained very active.
The club had a big week of tennis last week which culminated in five committee members and all three coaching staff and partners attending the Tennis Queensland Awards Night at the Convention Centre at South Bank in Brisbane.
The club was nominated for both the Regional Club of the Year and the State Club of the Year.
Coolum’s was was the first visual presentation, with President Des Adsett giving relevant facts about the club, accompanied by a visual display of various activities that happen at the club.
Coolum Tennis Club was a joint winner with Barcaldine in the Regional Club of the Year.
The club was honoured to be listed with clubs that put in such a tremendous effort to promote the game of tennis.
Many volunteers work hard around the state to provide opportunities for people of all ages to play tennis. Des Adsett received the perpetual trophy from Daphne Fancutt. The club also received their own beautiful glass trophy and an Ipad mini. It is hoped the Ipad mini will help with registering players and making administration more convenient.
The club hopes to play the video that was shown for the presentation at the Christmas Party on Sunday, 6 December.
They are hoping for a big turn out as by then, all Club Championships will be decided and presented on the day.
The B Grade Ladies was played on Tuesday 10 November and the B Grade Mixed Doubles on Thursday 12 November. Unfortunately, last year’s winners of the Ladies are unable to defend their title, as Jenny Boland had to return to Melbourne for a while. The A Grade Doubles will have been played at night.
Coolum Travellers had one of their most enjoyable matches of the season, but lost by one game to a lower ranked team. One of the team members played on with an injury, but the club is not using that as an excuse.
The night time competition against Peregian on Thursdays is proving to be a very close competition with members enjoying the opportunity of playing different players.
The teams are not set, so new players are always welcome. Last week, there was a family of holiday makers adding their expertise to the social tennis. Sylvia, Bevan and their brother from Rockhampton, Alpha and Gladstone respectively played excellent tennis. The club also had new people who have moved to the area join in social tennis. From now on, new players can join for the rest of the year for the cost of the next year’s membership.
This is a great deal and one that was taken advantage of last year with people relocating to Coolum before the New Year.
One of the benefits of being a member, is the bus trip head coach Andrew Ash offers to members and friends. The bus has been hired and filled for attendance at the Brisbane International. This usually proves to be a great day out.
In the next couple of weeks, there will be a lot of competition and championships results before things wind down for the Christmas break.
