Dose of health for kids

By Margaret Maccoll

Students at Sunshine Beach State School were excited to see Healthy Harold when the Life Education mobile van made its annual visit recently.
Healthy lifestyles and relationships are the main emphasis of this program that has operated since 1979. Sessions focus on issues around safe and unsafe behaviours or environments, food and nutrition, personal safety, physical activity, cyber safety, safety with medicine and legal drugs, tobacco, alcohol and caffeine as well as working in teams and building great friendships.
Year 3 teacher Vanessa said Niki and Healthy Harold were great mentors for students because they delivered important messages about health issues that were relevant and important while making the learning process fun through puppetry, educational videos and other games.
“These hands-on activities help children to learn as they are mentally and physically stimulating,” she said. “As an educator, it’s fantastic to have a program that supports the Health curriculum with age appropriate topics including Growing Good Friends, My Body Matters and All Systems Go.”
