Uphill battle brings people together

A PROJECT of the Cooroy and Pomona Lions Club, the annual King of the Mountain Festival brings together a host of family-orientated attractions and event experiences.
While Sunday 24 July marks the 38th anniversary of the gruelling Bendigo Bank King of the Mountain Challenge race, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to participate.
The festival brings together a host of attractions and event experiences and competitors and spectators alike can look forward to another fun-filled event which includes other family-friendly races, heritage markets, antiques fair, amusement rides, local cuisine and live music all within the beautiful hinterland setting of Pomona.
This year the inaugural Prince and Princess race will take place on Saturday 23 July. The race is aimed at children aged nine to 13 with cash prizes up for grabs and medals and trophies.
Featuring a shortened 3.4km course, the track will begin at the Pomona Lions Den, continue through the forest, to the base of the mountain, along the walking track connecting back to the forest track and finish at the Lions Den.
The Prince and Princess winners will be presented with their trophies, medals and prize money prior to the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge trophy presentation on Sunday 24 July, at 4pm, on the main stage.
Sponsored by Nestle, the three kilometre Family Fun Run on Sunday 24 July is designed to suit the family unit.
This is an easy run that can be enjoyed by mum and dad and young children alike and is suitable for children as young as four.
The route takes the runners around the park and to the mountain car park. From there participants enter the forest and follow the marked trail to the Mountain Challenge track. Return to the park is via the mountain challenge track.
Older children are welcome to complete the run by themselves as the route is clearly marked and supervised by marshals over the entire course.
The Nestle Family Fun Run commences at 9am sharp at the start/finish line, with registration open from 8am.
For parents of babies and toddlers wishing to participate in Sunday’s race events, the 2.1km Sandpit Kids Clothing pram push around Stan Topper Park is a pram-friendly run that can be mutually enjoyed by parents and bubs. Registration is open from 8am with the race starting at 9.10am sharp at the start/finish line.
As a volunteer-run organisation dedicated to serving and supporting the local community, fund-raising is an important part of the day and all race entry fees go towards helping the Cooroy-Pomona Lions support a wide range of local charities and school programs.
Please note that registration forms must be filled out and handed in on the day at the registration tent near the roundabout to be eligible to participate and can be downloaded from the King of the Mountain website.
