A-GRADE humanities students at Sunshine Beach State High School were treated to an Asian feast and a special guest speaker as part of World Food Day on Friday 16 October.
World Food Day is a day of action against hunger where people come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger and this year the top achieving students gathered to share a meal and learn more about the impacts of global climate change on communities around the world.
Students who study humanities learn about geography, various biomes and food security throughout the world as well as history.
Research fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s (USC) sustainability research centre Dr Tristan Pearce joined the students to talk about the impacts of global warming throughout his native Canada.
Dr Pearce shared stories of his work in the Canadian Arctic where he investigated how changes in the environment affect the indigenous population’s ability to hunt and create a healthy, nutritious food system.
Dr Pearce said he was excited to speak with the students and hoped that by sharing his research and stories he would inspire the students to go out and learn more.
