Members and guests of the Tewantin Heritage and Historical Society celebrated the 21st anniversary of the society’s formation on 12 June with a cruise on the Noosa River courtesy of the Noosa Ferry owners.
The Society was formed by passionate local residents and interested Councillors with a view to preserving the history of the Tewantin area. During its lifetime the Society has been involved in local events and has for many years conducted an Historical Walk through Tewantin as part of the annual Noosa Alive Festival.
With the assistance of Noosa Council, the Society was able to obtain the hut belonging to Howard Parkyn which was relocated to central Tewantin providing a home for the Heritage group and where an Information Centre was established a few years later.
This celebration was scheduled to coincide with the 17th anniversary of the official opening of the Hut in 2001. Noosa Councillor and society founding member Frank Pardon was present along with Council heritage librarian Jane Harding as well as past presidents and more than 50 current volunteers of the Parkyn Hut Information Centre.
During the festivities, Honorary Life Membership was bestowed upon founding members, current president Gail McBurney and Olive Donaldson and celebratory cakes were cut.
