Lenscape

Find out more about the local brushtail possum.

THIS week’s Lenscape contribution comes from Susan Tilley of Tewantin who snapped a close-up of a visiting brushtail possum.
“This beautiful common brushtail possum was photographed one evening stealing bird seed from our bird feeder,“ she said.
“The feeder is attached to an arm extending from our deck and this large possum was perched precariously enjoying an evening meal.”
Passionate about local wildlife, Ms Tilley has since done some research about the common brushtail possum which she said was the most familiar and abundant of the Australian possums.
“It is a large possum with a bushy tail and pointy ears. Usually silvery grey in colour with a black band across the snout, they have a white to brownish-yellow belly. Adults can weigh around 1.5-4 kg. The combined head and body length is between 35 and 55 cm and tail length is 25-40 cm,“ she said.
