A NEW fridge and freezer is a wish come true for Eumundi’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which can now store bulk food thanks to a community grant.
The rehabilitation centre has received $2090 as part of the Queensland Government’s Caring for our Community program that has seen local organisations share in more than $14,000 to help them buy much-needed equipment.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre president Ken Hodges said the organisation was very grateful for the grant as they could now buy bulk animal food and store it safely in the fridge and freezer.
“The fridge and freezer we currently have are getting old. I think they were donated when we first opened,” he said.
“With the new gear we can keep down some costs and buy in bulk, as food is our biggest cost.”
Noosa MP Glen Elmes said it was important to support local community and volunteer organisations as they are the backbone of places such as Noosa.
“We understand the importance of these groups and have a strong plan to grow Queensland communities,” he said.
Three other local groups received a share in the funding, including Noosa Branch Little Athletics Centre, Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club and Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club.
“Whether it’s for a printer, computer, fridge or microwave, the cost of equipment or infrastructure mounts up quickly for spirit-rich but cash-poor community groups,” Mr Elmes said.
“A small boost like this can go along way and make a real difference.”
Mr Hodges said the community grant was a great show of support for local groups.
“Mr Elmes has been very supportive. We must have touched his heart,” he said.
