Nine pines escape the chop

NINE hoop pine trees that faced the axe have been saved with Noosa Council deciding to leave the trees as they are.
Last week Noosa Today reported a local Bushcare volunteer was desperately trying to save the trees that stand on the river’s edge at the end of Cambridge Court, Tewantin, after the council received a complaint about the trees’ debris.
Sunshine Beach Bushcare volunteer co-ordinator Justin Campbell said he was anxious to protect the trees that could be up to 90 years old.
Noosa Today contacted Noosa Council who said a decision on the fate of the trees was pending.
Today (22 June) Mr Campbell forwarded a letter from Noosa Council to Noosa Today stating the request to remove the trees was “not supported”.
The letter said the trees will not be cut down, but a follow-up inspection will take place between November this year and January 2016 to “ascertain the level of seed dispersal”, plus the trees will be subject to annual inspections with any dead or overhanging branches to be removed.
The council said the decision to leave the trees was based on the council’s Organisational Policy – tree management on public land – plus stakeholder feedback, arborist reports and reviews of recent decisions involving the impact of tree debris on neighbouring properties.
