Festival’s big on sight and sound

By Hollie Harris

AFTER the massive sell-out success of the previous Junction Alley Festival it’s back bigger and better than ever on Saturday night with a whole suite of hot acts and epic art.
They will be welcoming back their signature blend of sweet live and electronic tunes, eye-bending visual artists, scrumptious street foods and boozy treats and this time expect a few cherries on top.
You won’t want to miss the 10-metre light wall made up of six projectors all working together to create a sensory overload of visual arts – and the line-up of music is going to blow your mind.
All in one event, Junction Alley will rock the Junction like never before with some truly special performers all leading up to the headlining act Vaudeville Smash.
Event organiser and founder Roland West described them as a massively infectious sound.
“They are a disco-fuelled dance monster,” Roland said.
From the back of the SXSW festival and a string of smash hit singles, internationally renowned Vaudeville Smash are a disco-flute-funk fuelled monster that must be seen live.
Bullhorn are also in the line-up and high energy is what you can expect from their seven horns, boss drummers and monster MC. Rich sonic textures of funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and dance make for a rumbling live show.
A must see is winner of Triple J’s Unearthed Playschool remix comp, Copycatt.
This 19-year-old wiz kid of a producer, inspired by the likes of KOAN sound, Madlib and Skrillex is in the national spotlight for good reason.
“This is not just a kid hanging out playing local venues, he is actually a really serious hardworking artist and we want to support his career.
“We hope to connect these types of artists with audiences,” Roland said.
Switchkraft is another highlight of the event, who serve up a mangled cacophony of electronic symphony boasting members of Tijuana Cartel – this is a music project like no other.
Jimmy Davis packs a lot of sound for one guy with backing from his trademark 12-string guitar and his unique balance of power and delicacy.
There are plenty more producers and sets woven throughout the evening; all surrounded by the giant light wall which offers a totally new visual experience.
“It will be and incredibly immersive experience. We’ve been able to create this light wall to celebrate how visual arts and music can work together,” Roland said.
