Our MP with corruption watchdog

When he’s not representing the people of Noosa in various meetings, Noosa MP Glen Elmes has taken on a new role as a member of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee (PCCC).
Last week he visited their offices for the first time to find out what happens there.
The PCCC monitors and reviews the performance of the CCC, which is the statutory body set up to reduce the incidence of major crime and corruption and protect witnesses. The committee is made up of four government and three Opposition members and chaired by Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg.
“As members of the committee we are advised of the confidential activities of the CCC and meet regularly with senior members of the commission to review the work they do in areas like serious crime and criminal gangs, terrorist activity, allegations of corruption in both public and private sectors, and without doubt the most disturbing paedophilia and child pornography,” Glen said.
The Parliamentary committee’s role is to oversee the CCC’s activities, engage with commission staff and explore ways in which their activities can be streamlined for efficiency or accountability.
Public and private hearings are held quarterly between them to discuss operations and progress on matters of concern.
Mr Elmes said he was unable to discuss the highly confidential work of the commission but was proud to be a committee member.
