NOOSA Council has moved to have several environmentally sensitive land parcels protected under the conservation tenure and gazetted as National Park.
The matter was raised during this council’s Planning and Organisation Committee meeting on Tuesday, 14 October, with a final councillor vote expected next Thursday, 23 October.
The land parcels cover more than 660 hectares and includes Boreen Parade, Tarangau Station (Cootharaba), Noosa North Shore (eastern beach), Marcus Beach and Lake Cooroibah Road.
The move follows more than 31 parcels of land purchased for protection since 1996 and covers approximately 1400 hectares.
“There are nine parcels of land that were purchased through the Environment Levy or jointly with State and Commonwealth funds,” the council report read.
“The parcels have not been placed under conservation tenure (and) in some cases these lands were purchased between seven and 11 years ago.”
The protection of sensitive sand dunes at Marcus Dunes was high on the list of priorities for council.
“Marcus Dunes is a significant high dune coastal landform with dry heath and Banksia woodland – current tenure is Unallocated State Land (USL) and because it adjoins Noosa National Park, it is preferable that this property also be gazetted as National Park.” the report read.
The motion was pending a councillor vote during council’s ordinary meeting next week.
