Offshore anglers battle wind

Christina Martin with a couple of nice Snapper.

By JACK MANGROVE

HOW things can change in a week, with the wind picking up the offshore scene was a little slower, still the diehards made their way out and were rewarded for their efforts, those that made it to North Reef caught nice pan-sized snapper, maori cod, cobia and dolphin fish.
A little closer in Halls and Sunshine Reefs also produced some great snapper and sweetlip. The bay has fished well with tuna and bonito hitting the bait schools.
On the river, the mouth has been the place to be, tailor have been feeding on the incoming schools of bait early in the morning, flathead have also been on the chew and have been taking small pilchards and soft plastics. A little further up river there have been some great elbow slapper whiting around the dog beach and the frying pan. The Gympie Terrace stretch of the river has also produced nice whiting as well as bream and trevally around Munna point. Upriver the first ski run has been good for flathead on the last of the run out tide, the shallow bank is where these ambush predators lay in wait for a passing morsel of food, so don’t think twice about casting along those shallow areas near Makepeace and Sheep Island. Up between the lakes the area of rough ground just before Johns Landing has been producing some nice Jacks with live baits and deep diving lures the best approach.
North Shore has again been firing, tailor have still been making there presence felt with some great fish over the 2kg mark taken, the southern beaches are also seeing the tailor with some nice catches coming from Marcus and Perigan beaches. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
