Anyone for Comedy Anywhere?

By Hollie Harris

It’s stand-up comedy, but not as we know it, in Noosa this weekend (May 26-27). Comedy Lounge for the Anywhere Theatre Festival brings a top line up of local and touring comedians to the most homely venue possible.

If you’re new to the delights of the Anywhere Theatre Festival, the clue is in the name; it’s performance anywhere but in a theatre. In this case it’s ‘Mel’s Place’, a leafy home on the shores of Lake Weyba that will become Comedy Central this weekend, along with street food and a cash bar.

Anna Brennan is well known locally for her regular comedy nights in Eumundi and was runner-up in this year’s RAW comedy competition in Brisbane. She’ll be joined by some seriously funny stand-ups, Christopher Martin, Claudia Bergs, David Woodhead, Sarah Kate Young, and Carolyn Mandersloot with Sam Bowden as MC. Sam recently supported the likes of Danny Bhoy and Brian Posehn and has been telling everyone ever since.

Carolyn, another RAW Comedy finalist, doubles as a palliative care nurse from Gympie, and manages to find humour in just about anything…yes, including the end of life.

The Anywhere Theatre Festival started in Brisbane seven years ago and has more recently made its mark on the Sunshine Coast, supporting artists to perform and entertain new audiences in the unlikeliest of venues.

This weekend’s Comedy Lounge organiser, Robyn Hewitt, says it’s like a pop-up bar; “For just $20 you get to see some genuinely talented and funny acts, in the unexpected intimacy of a home.”

There’s still time to book a ticket on line for performances this Saturday (May 26th) at 6.30pm, and on Sunday (May 27th) at either 2pm or 6.30pm.

To book online go to the festival website ‘Anywhere.is’ and search Comedy Lounge or go to the Facebook event page by searching ‘Comedy Lounge Anywhere Theatre’ or give Robyn a call on 0432 903 122. You will get details of the venue address when you book a ticket.
