Waves of art

Those who have not heard of local artist Owen Cavanagh will almost certainly have seen his work.
Owen’s largest mural and best known ‘Wave Mural’ can be seen from the Sunshine Coast motorway north of Pacific Paradise.
Back in 2003 he was tagged by local media as the surf art guru and Owen has always been recognised for his surf art sprays.
These have been large murals like the one on the motorway, canvasses and corrugated iron paintings, even spraying surf art on refrigerators.
This month he has curated the fourth Surf Art Expo on the Sunshine Coast and the first one to be held in Noosa.
It will feature the longest list ever for the expo, over 30 local artists and a series of live art demonstrations.
Owen has pulled together some extraordinary artisans who work with fairly unconventional tools and unusual mediums.
The public can expect to enjoy live art demonstrations from some of the best artist in their known trades, including chainsaw sculptor Shane Christensen, timber stain mural artist David Hardy, and surfboard shapers Tully St John and Andrew Warhurst.
Owen Cavanagh and Ron Tickle will be demonstrating live surf mural art.
Two competitions will be held on the day.
For children The Kids Surf Art will have two categories and for adults there is the Best Surf Style Vehicle.
Kids can bring along prepared artworks and vehicles can show up on the day. Lots of great prizes to be won.
The fourth Surf Art Expo will be a charity event to support locals with funds raised from a simple gold coin donation.
All proceeds will go to the Wishlist Foundation and The Surfrider Foundation.
It’s all set to be a fun, family event on 28 and 29 October at Noosa Surf Works at 1/11 Bartlett Street, Noosaville, at the Shotgun Factory.
