Doe-eyed appeal to help struggling animal shelter

THE RSPCA Noosa shelter is struggling to find forever homes for about 118 cats and dogs plus two friendly pet rats as space becomes scarce.
The shelter is calling on local families to adopt a pet to ease the burden.
Several dogs have been housed at the Eumundi-Noosa Road shelter for the past eight months and while puppies are the preferred pet to adopt, older dogs also have their charm.
Shelter manager Nicole Cleary said the need was now desperate.
“What it means is the RSPCA Noosa shelter is now closed to in-coming animals until space becomes available,” she said.
Mrs Cleary said it was hard for staff to cope with the numbers and not being able to assist people in urgent need.
The RSPCA Noosa Shelter has a policy not to euthanase healthy and treatable animals and therefore many animals are moved around the state.
All animals come de-sexed, micro-chipped and vaccinated and with a 14-day health cover and return policy.
“The need is not just around Christmas anymore – it’s all year round and we need some help,” she said.
The shelter is open 10am-5pm seven days a week. Prices range from $315 per dog to $465 per puppy to $118 for a cat and $199 for a kitten.
