PERSONAL tragedy has inspired Sunshine Beach State School teacher Greg Brennan to encourage his students to support Movember.
The world-wide organisation raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer research as well as men’s mental health and suicide prevention, but instead of growing a mo for the month, Mr Brennan decided to do something different and reduced his facial hair each day from a “cave man” beard to a mo.
Mr Brennan said he was inspired by the loss of family members to do his bit to raise funds and awareness for men’s health.
“Movember is important to me because my family and I have been personally affected by both these men’s conditions in the past year,” he said.
“My dad was a GP in Ipswich for over 60 years. He had a good innings but prostate cancer affected his quality of life over the last 20 years.
“My nephew was inspired by Dad and began his internship at Caboolture hospital as a GP after completing his Business Law degree and working for a major law firm in Brisbane. Law was not his field. He was too caring and felt medicine was a profession where he could make a difference.
“Even someone as talented as my nephew found life an extraordinary challenge he could not fully comprehend. His solution was one all those left behind regret to this day.”
Mr Brennan has asked the Sunshine Beach school community and the wider community to support Movember in memory of his family members and “all the other untold stories out there of people also trying to deal with the fall-out associated with men’s health now, in the future or past”.
