Paddle raises awareness

A MERMAID with a message will wash up on Peregian Beach as she completes a record breaking 1000km paddle for charity.
Juliana Bahr-Thomson will set off on an adventure of a lifetime as she paddles from Newcastle to Noosa to raise awareness and much-needed funds for White Ribbon Foundation and Surfrider Foundation.
Juliana will set out from Newcastle Harbour on 1 May, and aims to finish the record-breaking paddle on Peregian Beach on 11 June, after 42 days of paddling.
“This particular month was chosen due to the wind and swell patterns this time of year, which usually come from the southeast,” Juliana said.
“This is also close to the east coast whale migration time which should provide some life-changing encounters and memorable moments mid paddle.”
Juliana said the White Ribbon Foundation held a special meaning for her and wanted to use the paddle to raise awareness.
“As a victim of domestic violence for almost all of my life, I now feel it is my legacy to pass on my message of strength and self-assurance to other women and young people,” Juliana said.
“This is a solo charity mission with the aim to raise over $50,000. No paddle this length has previously been done by a male or female, so it will double as a Guinness World Record paddle.“
Juliana has currently raised over $3315, and will be conducting community and school education talks along the way north to spread her message. If you would like to find out more or support Juliana, head to her website at www.mermaidwithamessage.com.au.
